CV Dos

  • Keep it simple, clear and easy to read
  • Target the CV to the job applied for
  • Use short, concise sentences
  • Start with the first draft and expect to do several revisions
  • Start with the most important information at the beginning
  • Focus on your special abilities
  • Put your achievement statements in order- most relevant first
  • Quantify the results of your achievements where possible
  • Tell the truth
  • Be consistent in punctuation and capitalization
  • Check your spelling
  • Use past tense for all achievements: this emphasises completion
  • Start every sentence with an action verb
  • Make it visually appealing
  • Keep it to one or two pages maximum
  • Have it critiqued and proofread by others
  • Avoid unusual fonts and colours or shading. Arial or Times Roman at 11/12 points size is best.  CVs are often scanned, faxed or copied.

CV Don’ts

  • Health, height, weight, or marital status
  • References or the words “References will be furnished upon request”
  • Salary history or requirements
  • Reasons for leaving previous position(s)
  • Don’t leave gaps between employment dates without stating a good reason for the gap
  • Don’t be modest (use achievement statements)
  • Don’t use the phrase “responsible for….” (Refer to the action word list)
  • Don’t include negative information
  • Don’t use abbreviations (make it a formal document)
  • Don’t include your photograph unless required to do so
  • Don’t use business-specific jargon or complicated technical sentences unless it is destined for a technical audience
  • Don’t write long sentences or paragraphs of prose
  • Don’t use colours or complicated fonts
  • Don’t use tables or graphics. These can distort when opened on other computers or in different packages.
