The Return of Training?

One of the first things to be cut when the recession hit was the corporate training budget. To most companies there seemed little point in investing in the future when it was so uncertain. And so at Career Energy we saw a surge in the number of trainers looking for work and a general sense amongst our clients that they were not buying anything. But that seems to be changing.

Reports over the past few days indicate that firms are now selectively re-introducing their training budgets. And we are certainly seeing fewer trainers approaching us for work. The types of training that are being chosen are very much around sales and business development, rather than soft skills, but it is a start and a possible indicator that the recession is entering a new phase.

Which is why over the next few weeks Career Energy will be returning to the training arena. We too will be selective in what we offer, because we know that for many of our clients the climate is not yet good enough for them to invest in full blown training programmes. Many firms are still making redundancies and the only career support they are purchasing is outplacement.

But carefully structured, low cost, high impact training can make the difference between survival and demise in this climate. And crucially it enables employees to engage with their companies , fostering loyalty and reducing the churn that always happens as an economy moves out of recession. With the economy the way it is, many companies have drastically cut back their costs. As we all know training costs a lot and so companies are trying to cut their training budgets.
