The Job Market Today

We continue to see conflicting signals from economic data about the pace of recovery, or even if there is a recovery at all. It was announced yesterday that retail sales at Christmas had beaten expectations. A good sign, you might think. But it was also announced that the pace of house price rises has eased. Not such a good sign. And in the USA there has been a surprise rise in job losses. What are we to make of it all? And there is a wildcard in the pack. What impact will the recent weather have?

From a job seeker’s perspective, the news is not yet good enough. This week, the second in January, is when employment opportunities traditionally pick up after the December lull. But will they? When a good proportion of the population are struggling to get to work,  and with our attention distracted by the day to day difficulties that bad weather brings, are companies really going to feel confident enough about the economy to consider recruiting new staff?

The best we can probably hope for is that the traditional January upturn in the labour market gets delayed by a few weeks, until the weather and its impact on travel and day to day life improves. Perhaps that is when the economic indicators will start to be consistently more positive. But in the meantime job seekers should remember that people are getting jobs every day. And there is no reason why those people should not include you.
