When Amy Williams became the first British solo gold medallist at the Winter Olympics since 1980, her sister Ruth said: “It’s fantastic. Amy has lived her dream”. How exciting for Amy. When Bad Weather Is Not A Crisis

The bad weather has crystallised some interesting attitudes amongst companies and their staff. Travelling home yesterday I overhead two people praising their company for encouraging its people to go home early whilst they could, or to work from home if travel was really impossible for them. When I got home my wife told me of a radio report decrying companies who are telling their staff that if they don’t get to work in the bad weather they will lose pay. Two very different attitudes. The engineering consultancy WSP have been running an innovative scheme to encourage staff to reduce their carbon footprint. The scheme will be welcomed by environmentalists and career professionals but less so by libertarians. Libertarian environmentalists will have something to think about.

The Madoff Test

Imagine this. You have worked for a company for, say, fifteen years. You have been a loyal employee and the company has been a good employer. Your salary and bonuses have always been paid on time, the company has invested in your personal development and you have made a positive contribution to their success. Then one day the boss walks in with a long face, puts his hands up and says “Sorry but the whole thing has been a scam, there is no money left, the fraud squad are investigating me and you are out of a job”. There is not  much you can do about it now, but could you have done anything better?
