Uncertainty In The Public Sector

We should not be surprised by the lack of detail in the electioneering around public sector job cuts. For most electors certain public sector workers are heroic, one only has to think of the two firemen killed this week, the soldiers caught up in a daily bloodbath in Afghanistan, policemen, social and health care workers whose lives are filled with risk and confrontation, teachers and others who are frequently subjected to abuse and attack. An Uncertain Budget For Jobs

In some ways it is a shame that there is a general election due. I don’t say that because I have anything against democracy but because this week is budget week, and for the first time in many years we will not be given a clear picture of what the government intends to do about spending or taxation. At a time when many remain worried about their jobs – particularly in the public sector- this is unwelcome, even if understandable. (more…)
