Public Sector Co-operatives

The Conservative party are working on plans to give public sector employees the opportunity to deliver their services as part of a workers’ co-operative. This would give them a tangible stake in the organisation that they work for and an opportunity to benefit from careful financial management. It is an interesting idea. Workers’ co-operatives have been around for a long time although they began to fall from fashion half a century ago or more. (more…)

The Importance Of Personal Branding

After several years of expansion and recruitment, large parts of the public sector are now going through a period of restructuring, with many people being made redundant. In part this was planned; reshuffling the organisational structure of public sector bodies is nothing new, but this time the scale and speed of the restrucutre has been profoundly affected by the recession. Cutting Civil Service Jobs

According to the Chancellor of the Exchequer the government will find a further £5bn in efficiency savings in 2010/11. ‘Efficiency savings’ can be a code word for job losses. Job losses instigated by the government are likely to occur within the civil service. So what if you are a civil servant threatened by redundancy? What can you do? If there are few job opportunities in the civil service, should you move into the commercial world? (more…)
