Over the past few months this blog has discussed strategies for getting a job during a recession. Networking, as always, is the key, but there is a limit to what you can achieve with your network. Even though the theory of networking is that every contact you meet should lead you to further contacts, most people find that they reach a point at which they have exhausted their network and hit a brick wall.

This is the time to consider what other networks you may be able to join. And of course the key to this is to find networks of quality, not just any old group of people. Your networking contacts need to be relevant to your career path, willing to meet you and connected to others.

We all need networks, irrespective of whether or not you are looking for a job right now. Firstly because there is no telling how secure your job is in this climate. Secondly, and more importantly, because networking is not just something to do when you are looking for a job. It is a lifelong, career management activity; it is essential to remain connected if you want to ensure that your career works out the way you had planned.
