			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Department for Work and Pensions have been testing employers&#8217; adherence to the discrimination laws by sending out bogus job applications from fictitious people with foreign names. They have found that employers &#8221;still discriminate against people solely on the basis of having an ethnic minority name.&#8221; Employers are up in arms about the DWP&#8217;s tactics but the DWP says it will use the research to help judge levels of discrimination in the jobs market.</p>

<p>The problem of course is that the law is an ineffective weapon against discrimination. All the legislation in the world cannot stop an employer from failing to appoint someone whom they don&#8217;t want, whether the reasons are based on discrimination or experience. Sure, occasionally a victim of discrimination might bring a successful challenge in the courts, but such cases are few and far between. How could they be otherwise?</p>
<p>Our attitudes to others can only be changed throgh education and enlightnment, not the power of the courts. We have made tremendous progress as a society over the last half century in welcoming and fostering diversity. There is more work to be done and it will be achieved as it has up to now, through integration and education.</p>
<p>The recession has resulting in greatly reduced training budgets for most companies, but diversity training remains an imperative for every company which recognises that a harmonious workforce is good for productivity and profits. The Energiser programme from Career Energy advances diversity and tackles discrimination head on. Getting employers to recognise that discrimination has a negative impact on the bottom line is surely a better tactic than the entrapment policy the DWP chose to use.</p>

Now that we are seeing the first tentative signs of recovery, businesses are tentatively looking at training again; after all to survive in the new economy companies will need to be fitter and their staff will need to be engaged and skilled. But training is still expensive and it takes people out of the workplace for extended periods of time, just when their presence is most needed. Which is why we are introducing Career Energy Energisers.</p>

<p>Energisers are a new concept in training. They are short, sharp, learning based interventions delivered over a lunch period or before or after work and rarely lasting more than an hour an a half. They cover a range of topics, to meet both institutional and personal needs.</p>
<p>At an institutional level Energiser topics include old favourites such as Leadership Development and Team Working together with subjects that have become even more important as a result in the change in the economic climate, including Employee Engagement and Managing Restucturing. On the personal level topics include Career Management, Team Working and Achieving Goals.</p>
<p>The concept sounds simple but of course the proof lies in the outputs. To deliver a 90 minute session to 20 people and ensure that each person leaves with at least four new learning outcomes is no mean feat. Our consultants and trainers have been working rigorously to devise the Energiser sessions effectively, and to develop the skils they need to deliver them  effectively. And it works. Initial market testing has found high levels of interest amongst our customer base.</p>
