Ethical Chocolate

Cadbury, the chocolate manufacturer plans to fight a hostile takeover bid by focusing on the company’s ethical and socially responsible achievements. This is the probably the first time that a company is using anything other than financial arguments to persuade shareholders to oppose a takeover. As such it represents a significant step  forward for those who advocate a greater sense of social awareness in the corporate world. (more…)

The Value of Values

The BBC has been  running a project entitled Workarama in which they ask schools to share their pupils’ experiences of work and chores. Most of the responses they have had are from children who do household chores for pocket money. Nothing surprising there. But not all kids work at home for money. Some of the answers are quite touching.

A Caring Economy?

Several times a day for the past few weeks Career Energy has been receiving calls from HR professionals, all of whom have the same question: “My company is making people redundant. We would like to offer them outplacement. I have not done this before. Can you tell me about it?” Clearly outplacement is being talked about in HR circles as a new and essential component of the redundancy process. Volunteering

If any season is volunteering season, this is it. It is when people who just don’t get the opportunity during the rest of the year find the time to work in a local shelter or soup kitchen, or to help out with activities being organised by local groups and clubs. And afterwards, as the winter holiday season is drawing to an end and the prospect of returning to work is looming, the refrain is generally ‘I enjoyed that; I wish I could do it more often’.
