An Uncertain Budget For Jobs

In some ways it is a shame that there is a general election due. I don’t say that because I have anything against democracy but because this week is budget week, and for the first time in many years we will not be given a clear picture of what the government intends to do about spending or taxation. At a time when many remain worried about their jobs – particularly in the public sector- this is unwelcome, even if understandable. (more…)

The Value of Talent

The pious outrage expressed by sections of the media over the 50% top tax band is as ill-informed as it is partisan. It is based on the false assumption that the salaries that people earn are directly proportional to their ability and their value to the national economy. Which is patently not the case.

A Budget For Jobs?

Today’s budget is expected to be a ‘budget for jobs’. Amongst the measures likely to be announced are a job creation scheme for youth, support for the car industry through a scrappage scheme and grants for employers in certain sectors, particularly social care, hospitality and local authorities, to employ eligible job seekers. Wasteful Efficiency Savings
