Regulating A New Profession

Being in at the start of the new Career Consultancy profession is tremendously exciting. Over the past twenty years the concept and practice of giving career advice to adults who take an interest in their future has developed beyond all expectations. More and more people are using career consultants and even more are aware of the benefits. But with growth comes responsibility, and a fair share of difficulties.

One of the biggest problems that reputable career consultancies like Career Energy face is that there are no barriers to entry into the profession. Anyone can set up as a  career consultant; create a web site, make a few extravagant claims about themselves and off they go. Although there are some superb training courses out there, most career cowboys do not take advantage of them, they simply think that they have the intuitive skills to give advice, and to take money off unsuspecting people.

Which is why the profession needs a professional association for its consulting firms. There are already professional bodies for individual career coaches which function well, but no place where Career Consultancies of integrity can come together, agree common standards of practice and service and create an accreditation system that allows the public to be confident that they are choosing a  provider of repute.

This is a stage that every new profession reaches. Career consultancy has now got there. All that is needs now is to make it happen. Any volunteers?
