Protecting Yourself Against Redundancy
There are several possible ways for a company to approach a round of redundancies. They can ask for people to step forward for voluntary redundancy. They can implement a policy of last in first out, or concentrate the cuts on one particular department or team which has become surplus to requirements. They do have legal constraints on what does and what does not constitute redundancy. But at the end of the day, irrespective of the law, many companies will use personal, subjective methods to determine who to let go and who to keep. Put bluntly they will try to get rid of those who are underperforming or who do not fit it. So how do you guard against possible redundancy yourself?
In many ways it is a similar strategy to the one you might adopt if you were seeking a promotion. It is about making sure that what you do in the company is recognised and valued. That, without blowing your own trumpet to the point where you become annoying, you make sure that your achievements are brought to the attention of your line managers and bosses. It is about networking well, so that you are known and respected. And most importantly it is about being a willing and reliable candidate for those tasks that nobody else wants to take on.
These are all big things and each strategy needs to be refined within the context of your particular job and your particualr company. But if you feel your job may be under threat, and you want to keep it, it is worth implementing an anti-redundancy strategy now. It may well be something that you cannot do on your own. If so, please give Career Energy a call, let’s try to work it out together.
