Creative Solutions For The Creative Industries
I never cease to be amazed by the number of people who come to us at Career Energy hoping to start a new career in film or TV. Not just young people, I was talking the other day to a man in his mid forties who had a dream of getting into the film industiry. But as anyone who has tried to establish themselves in the media will tell you, it is a very tough career to enter. For each person who succeeeds there are several who fail.
The tough media environment starts right from day one. The only entry level jobs are as runners (i.e. dogsbodies), usually on short term contracts and very low salaries. Those who stick with running, for maybe two or three years, will eventually be promoted to a level where they can earn a realistic salary. But they spend most of their running career worrying about where the next contract will come from.
It is a shame that all this passion cannot be employed more usefully. We import so much of our film and TV from the States. Yet if the creative industries here were better funded we could do so much more ourselves – of equally good, if not better quality.
What is missing is the entrepreurial creativity which recognises that, if funding could be found, the British TV and film industry would have a bright, vibrant future. There are plenty of business people out there who are enthusiastic about film from a personal perspective; they enjoy watching it. We need some of them to recognise the business opportunity that is curently lying dormant.
