Good post! LinkedIn is so important now and I feel like it your profile can make or break your professional relationships.

Regarding Job search or Recruitment, do you have any suggestions on groups to join? Have you found and that are a useful?

You make some great points here.

Many older people who have been laid off are in unfamiliar territory. Every aspect of the job search has evolved and they may be ashamed to ask for help and guidance. The best we can do is make resources and advice as readily available as possible.

Great point. One of the most promising things about this upcoming generation is that they are not focused entirely on money, and are not focused on lifestyle (the last two generational trends). They really seem interested in finding a purpose through work, and finding their unique place in the workforce.

I also think the issue of people who are hanging on at a job that they would have quit had the economy been better is something to address. I work with people who signed their names to false allegations about our boss to get her fired. I don't trust them or enjoy working with them. I know they want me gone too because I know what they did. They subtly sabotage me constantly and are trying to get me to quit, but I can't find another job as good as this one. I know they can't either, so we are all stuck together. The head administration doesn't care our department is no big deal to them, as long as we aren't heading for a law suit they don't care if anyone is being tortured daily. There are still a lot of good, honest employees left, but they want to stay out of it, they saw what happened to the last person who stood up to them.
I have written the head administration, but nothing gets done.
Is there an answer?

Great article! Students who want to go to college nowadays will have to content with possibily contributing more to the funding as opposed to years ago. I still feel that college degrees are essential to being successful so although people might be hesitant, it will be worth it in the end.

Great post, I think that cultural differences are always a problem when looking for employment, its such a shame that people can't accept other people.
I think that if I am turned down due to my culture - I wouldn't want to be a part of that company!

With the economy the way it is, many companies have drastically cut back their costs. As we all know training costs a lot and so companies are trying to cut their training budgets.

It's comforting to know that not everyone thinks it's crazy to even contemplate changing career in the current climate.

My feeling is that if I spend a year or even two preparing and training for a new career (while continuing to work in my current one), then with a bit of luck I'll be taking the plunge just at the right time to take advantage of the upturn.

Also worth bearing in mind that there are quite a few careers that are counter-cyclical and thrive in a recession. It's happy days for the insolvency practitioners, the lawyers, the bailiffs and of course the outplacement consultants.
